Classics Book Discussion: The Mikado, by W. S. Gilbert

Classics Book Discussion: The Mikado, by W. S. Gilbert In-Person

Beloved for its colorful costumes and sets, The Mikado reflects Victorians’ fascination with all things Japanese.  Sullivan’s sparkling music and the operetta’s exuberantly corkscrewing plot have made it an audience favorite for generations.

But under the laughter, the libretto contains Gilbert’s sharp satiric mirror of Victorian British society.  He skewers government graft and social snobbery.  The plot presents sexual predation, both male on female, and female against male.  And ever present is Gilbert’s disapproval of the over-abundance of crimes the British government punished by death.
