Lunchbox Learning Program: Pirates, Presented by Dr. Jonathan Mercantini

Lunchbox Learning Program: Pirates, Presented by Dr. Jonathan Mercantini In-Person

Dr. Jonathan Mercantini Presents: Pirates

We will explore “The Atlantic World” using the theme of pirates to understand the connections and transformations across Europe, Africa, and the Americas from the late fifteenth century until about 1800. Topics will include: colonization and settlement, labor, race and ethnicity.  Of course special attention will be paid to the many varieties of pirates, buccaneers, and privateers which roamed the Atlantic basin during this period. We will concern ourselves with the social history of these predators, as well as the longer term political and economic consequences for pirates and their victims, as well as broader, related issues, such as the trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and the colonization of the Americas. We will also better understand the enduring fascination with ‘pirates’.

Lunchbox Learning is a series of programs that are supported by the Friends of the Wayne Public Library. The series consists of musical programs, history lectures, and occasional dramatic programs.
