"Spring into Fiction Writing for Children’s Magazines"

In this workshop, we’ll discuss developing ideas, plotting, nailing satisfying endings, etc, that will make your short story strong and successful. We’ll also take a look at children’s writers' communities, some of the markets, the submission process and how to make your work stand out to an editor. 

Bestselling author, Karen DelleCava has been a member of The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) since 1996. She has volunteered for the Metro New York chapter as a contributing writer for the Professional Series events. She writes contemporary YA and middle grade short fiction. 
She received the Pewter Plate Award from Highlights magazine for her short story Alpha-best which appeared in the Feb. 2018 issue. She has also freelanced for an educational publisher-writing about writing-for middle grade and high school.
Karen has a BS in Business Administration from Montclair State University and studied writing for children at New School University. She has taught writing at William Paterson University.  When she's not reading, writing or playing Scrabble, you can find Karen in a step aerobics or Zumba class.

Janette Pardo

Janette is the Assistant Director. She is responsible for ordering books for the adult fiction, nonfiction and large print collections. Janette has a background in archival processing and preservation and is currently hard at work processing the Lockett Local History Collection.  

An avid reader, Janette runs the Romantic Fiction (first Wednesday of the month) and the Page Turners (second Wednesday of the month) book groups. She is also a supporter of the romance genre and will gladly help "match you" with the perfect romance novel.  

In 2021, Janette launched the Virtual Author Chat series where she chats with local authors about their writing and their path to publication. All of the chats have been recorded and are available to watch on the library's YouTube channel.
