Personal Brand Strategy for Writers: Creating a Platform You Can Live With

Writers feel pressured to develop an online “platform” because they hear agents, editors, and the publishing world won't see them as serious without one. There's a lot of advice out there about how big this platform needs to be, and how to build it. It can all be overwhelming to a writer who just wants to write! This session explains how to cut through the noise to create a personal brand and content strategy that is right for you. It focuses on how to determine what your objectives are, what are the right digital marketing elements, and how to optimize your investment so you have a platform that best serves your purpose.

James Irwin was a college professor and held leadership roles in national and international marketing communication before turning full-time to writing. Prior to all that he was a widely exhibited filmmaker and media artist whose work the Los Angeles Times called "witty and ingenious," and the San Francisco Chronicle described as "pithy — cerebral undercurrent sparked by sexual innuendo." His short stories and essays have been published in journals, newspapers, and magazines over the years. Originally from southeastern Pennsylvania, he now lives in northern New Jersey.

Janette is the Assistant Director. She has a B.A. in History and an M.S. in Library Science. Among her many responsibilities, her favorite is selecting and ordering books for the adult fiction, nonfiction and large print collections.

An avid reader, Janette runs the Romantic Fiction (first Wednesday of the month) and the Page Turners (second Wednesday of the month) book groups. She is also a supporter of the romance genre and will gladly help "match you" with the perfect romance novel.

In 2021, Janette launched a Virtual Author Chat series where she chats with local authors about their writing and their path to publication. All of the chats have been recorded and are available to watch on the library's YouTube channel. In 2025, Janette established a writers' circle at the library. Pen to Paper at Wayne PL meets on the third Saturday of each month. In concert with the writers' circle, Janette also organizes monthly writing workshops which are led by local published authors.
