Classics Book Discussion--Our Man In Havana, by Graham Greene In-Person
In Graham Greene’s satiric comedy, Jim Wormold--mild man and vacuum cleaner salesman in Batista’s Cuba--is facing a dilemma. His business is failing and his cluelessly extravagant daughter keeps putting him deeper into debt. Worse—she is dating Captain Segura, a notoriously brutal strongman.
Then Wormold is approached by Hawthorne, a British secret agent, and willy-nilly recruited to work for the M16 Secret Intelligence Service. That solves the money problem, but Wormold must now cough up intelligence. Desperate, he makes up a list of fake contacts, and sends diagrams of vacuum cleaner parts purporting to be a secret installation in the mountains. M16 swallows it all whole.
Only, somehow, his invented intelligence begins to have an uncanny way of becoming real. And Wormold finds himself in deadly danger.
